The Weapons of Jurassic Park and The Lost World

All of us who have been long time fans of the Jurassic Park movies know that both films have some pretty cool weapons in, and weapons can make a pretty big difference to action scenes in a movie. In this featured section of inGenNET you will learn about all the various weapons used in Jurassic Park and The Lost World, including who uses the weapons, technical specs and even some bloopers in the films that even their weapons experts didn’t pick up on.

The Weapons

SPAS-12

Probably the most recognized of the guns used in Jurassic Park, it is the weapon of choice for Robert Muldoon, but unfortunately doesn’t save him when found face to face with a Raptor! The SPAS-12 is the preferred weapon for close combat teams and law enforcement such as SWAT teams.

History

Developed from the earlier SPAS-11 (and apparently using the action of the PG-80 Franchi shotguns), the SPAS-12 was first introduced in the United States in 1983 by its importer, FIE.

The SPAS-12 operates from a gas system which can be switched off so that the fore grip can be used to operate the action manually like a Pump Shotgun, This allows the user to fire low-power, special rounds in the weapon. In addition to the folding metal stock, an optional plastic stock is available from Franchi (through FIE) for the SPAS-12. Many find the plastic stock more comfortable than the metal stock.

The SPAS 12 in Action

  • Robert Muldoon is seen holding a SPAS 12 as the first Raptor is being loaded into the pen at the beginning of the film.
  • When Ellie and Robert Muldoon are about to leave the emergency bunker, Mulddon takes a SPAS 12 off the rack and loads 5 shells into it.
  • It is later on after Ellie is inside the Shed we see Muldoon back in the jungle attempting to hunt down a Raptor using the SPAS 12, unfortunately resulting in his demise!
  • Alan Grant manages to fire off 4 rounds when Raptors are attacking the Control Room, the glass must have been bullet proof as it doesn’t penetrate the glass whatsoever all we see is 3 shatter marks!
  • A small number of the hunters in The Lost World can be seen carrying SPAS 12’s.

M16 A2 Assault Rifle

To the SPAS 12 possibly the second coolest weapon in Jurassic Park, we only see a cameo appearance from the M16 at the start of Jurassic Park. The M16 was first issued to American Soldiers in Vietnam in 1968. Since then, it was adopted by a dozen of military and police forces through out the world. Operation Desert Storm was one of the more current situations were the M16 has proven itself to be an excellent rifle.

As seen on the Discovery Channel, the military is discussing to adopt a new rifle as their standard issue rifle. The M4A1, a variant of the M16 rifle has a shorter barrel and an adjustable butt stock. Even though, the M4A1 is not a newly designed weapon, rather a modification of the M16 rifle.

The M16 A2 in Action

  • The M16 can be seen in large use at the start of Jurassic Park as the Raptor is being loaded into the pen, almost everyone of the technicians/gamekeepers can be seen holding one with the added bonus of a taser on the end.

HK 91 Assault Rifle

The HK91 (also known as the G3) can be seen in the The Lost World and is the weapon of choice of Dieter Stark. Once again, it doesn’t help him much.

The HK series of weapons commonly avaiable in the US consists of the HK-91 (7.62mm NATO) HK-93 (5.56mm NATO) and HK-94 (9mm NATO). All these rifles share common features, namely, the locking system consists of a roller locked inertial bolt, which operates as a delayed direct blow back action. Also the chambers of all these rifles contains shallow flutes starting just ahead of the web of the case, and ending just in front of the case mouth.

The HK 91 in Action

  • Dieter Stark can be seen holding the HK 91 many times throughout The Lost World and loses it when he falls down the large hill in the forest.
  • Many of the inGen hunters expedition group are seen holding HK91’s in The Lost World some with full stock some without.

Skeet Style Shotgun

Roland Tembo and Ajay Sidhu can be seen carrying large skeet style shotguns throughout the majority of The Lost World, the style normally used for hunting large game and clay shooting etc. I am not sure of the exact model of the shotgun so if anybody has any further information on it please e-mail me.

Gun Bloopers

Lost shot
When Alan Grant fires at the Raptors in Jurassic Park in the Control Room, 4 shotgun bursts from the SPAS 12 are heard but there are only 3 marks on the window.

Tough Raptor
When Robert Muldoon tries to hunt the Raptor near the end of Jurassic Park it looks like he got a clear shot to the head of the attacking Raptor, if so the Raptor should have been easily killed no matter how thick its skin was. Well. It’s a movie after all!
